Q: My LO is almost 13 weeks old and I breastfeed her for 1 feeding a day and the rest of the time she takes a bottle. I did not have a period from the time I finished the post baby bleeding till I went on birth control a week after my 6 week check up. Week 8 after having my LO (and 1 week after getting the birth control implant) I had a period… It was the longest and heaviest I have ever had. I was due to start my period about a week ago but it hasn’t fully came. I have been spotting for a whole week and it looks brownish like old blood, but no bright red bleeding and it is only when I wipe. I feel like something isn’t right with my body, but everyone thinks that it is just a combination of getting a cycle back and being on birth control again after almost 3 years. Have any of you ever experienced this? What could be causing this strange spotting for a week? Thanks!

A: You should go and see your doc, maybe the birth control that you are on doesn’t agree with you, you might need to swap to another form of birth control instead. There are a lot of people who’s bodies can’t tolerate certain forms of birth control and its different for everyone.

Q: After you finished active treatment, did you ever experience unusual menstrual cycles? While I was undergoing ABVD chemo for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma my periods were abnormally light, or I just didn’t have them at all, and my onco said that was typical and to not worry. I had a gyno exam in April and everything was okay. It’s been five weeks since my final chemo session, and now I’m having the opposite problem with my period. In mid-May I had atrocious PMS, and then the period itself was awful with terrible cramps and very tender breasts. It stopped about a week later, and then after a couple of days it started up again. I haven’t gone for more than 48 hours since then without bleeding. And it’s not just the bleeding – it’s the cramps and mood swings too. Is any of this a normal post-chemo reaction that I was unaware of?I don’t know what else could have caused it. Besides the period situation that is worrying me, I’m feeling awesome and very healthy now. I had a sinus infection for 11 days that I had to take antibiotics for, but besides that I haven’t been sick at all. I have happily put on about 8 pounds and am now finally at a healthy weight, though I’m still on the low range of it. I’ve been dancing a lot, but strenuous exercise never caused cycle problems before. I’m almost 18, and not currently sexually active or anything. So this is a mystery. My onco has been on vacation the past week, but I have an appointment with her on Tuesday. In the meantime, I’m just really curious to know if anyone else went through something like this. A: I haven’t been through chemo myself – but used to be a Radiation Therapist and am now working in cancer research/chemotherapy trials.With hodgkins Lymphoma – and other cancers too – the chemotherpy can temporarily stop periods. As they return, they can be irregular and heavy – and painful. The hormones will be all over the place for a while, and this is what causes the PMS and sore breasts. The cramping will be due to the hormones affecting the ovaries and uterine contractions. It may take several months/cycles for it to get back to normal, and some patients never get back to 100% like it was before.One other thing you may notice, which shows how potent chemo is – it the “ripple” effect on your finger nails. This is caused by the cycles of chemo stopping nail growth for a while, then nail growth starts between cycles, then stops again – causing ripples. This grows out too.Talk to your onco about it on Tuesday – but don’t worry too much, it will return to normal. You are actually lucky they came back at all – means you have good chance of being able to fall pregnant. Some people cant fall pregnant again after chemo.
