A: Well, I am now 26 weeks pregnant with my second and I bled a lot on and off during my first trimester. My doctor told me that it was never “normal” to bleed during pregnancy although it doesn’t always mean the pregnancy is ending. In my case it turned out that I had a blood clot in my utrerus and all we could do was hope that baby did bleed out with it. They called it a “threatened miscarriage”. It doesn’t mean that something is wrong but no one can tell you but your doctor so I would definitely call. You are probably fine but it’s better to be reassured by a professional. Good luck!

Can bleeding during early pregnancy mean something other than miscarriage?

Q: I am like 3 weeks pregnant after trying for awhile. I had a blood test 1 week after ovulation to see if I was pregnant. It came out negative. The doctor suggested I repeat it in a week since it was done early on. I took 2 home prgnancy tests over a week later on 2 different days and they were positive. I also have sore breasts and have been emotional. I have been spotting for the last 4 days at least. Not enough to even show on my pad but its there when I urinate and wipe. I also had a lot of cramping. I went to the Dr. and he did a trans-vaginal sonogram. I bled last night and today much heavier (still not like a period). I won’t know anything until next week because I go for blood today and then again at the end of the week. Some advice? The doctor said it could be implantation bleeding although spotting is usually not a good sign.well I hate to say it doesn’t look good for me. I had horrible cramping all night and then heavier bleeding with clots. Worst of all I can’t see my doctor until next week because of the holiday. I’m supposed to go to the lab friday for my 2nd blood test but feel like I shouldn’t bother. I know what the results will be.

A: It does sound like prolonged implantation bleeding. Try to keep off of your feet if you have been having difficulty conceiving. Also you should be taking prenatals if you are trying to conceive so keep it up if you are, and start if you are not. If you have been on hormones it may cause the symptoms you stated, but a positive HPT is usually a true positive, they practically never a false positive, but a frequent false negative. Other things that can cause spotting include vigorous sex or anemia or even a (sorry to say it) miscarriage. The lying horizontal and prenatal vitamins will help to prevent miscarriage if your uterus is less than receptive to implantation. If your body miscarries due to a DNA mismatch or blood type mismatch there isn’t much you can do at this point.
