The Hero We Needed

Elegant, graceful, inspiring.

He changed the game;

he changed the world.

He stole home in the 1955 World Series;

he stole hatred from the heart of America.

He stared intolerance in the face;

he never flinched.

He carried a burden no person should bear;

he carried it with a smile and an iron will.

His team was the Dodgers;

he played for everyone.

Lou Gehrig was the luckiest man on the face of the earth;

Jackie Robinson was the bravest.

Baseball is our national pastime;

and gave us a national hero.
