Skiathos Island, Greece

The Island of Skiathos in Greece has seen many things in its long history from the part it played in the Persian War in 480 BC when the fleet of King Xerxes was damaged during a storm on the rocks of the island enabling the Greek fleet to prevent what was left of Xerxes fleet from getting provisions to their troops while also defending the position of the Spartan 300 at Thermopylae Pass. To the arrival in 1704 of monks who would go on to build the Evangelistria Monastery where it than became a hide out for Greek rebels in the Greek War of Independence, then jump ahead a few hundred years and we have the film “Mama Mia” being partial filmed there.

This little island while becoming a popular tourist destination still retains its old world charm while providing the more modern conveniences. Most of the island is covered by Aleppo Pine that was almost made extinct on the island in the 19th century by shipbuilders; luckily the invention of the steamboat enabled the islands pines to recover. Even today though there is a builder located to the north of the town of Skiathos where the traditional Greek caiques are still built.

The population of the island is estimated at about 6,000 and for those tourist that have ventured to this beautiful little island will have discovered that there are 60 beaches and even during the height of the summer months it is possible to have an entire beach to yourself. There are many things to explore on the island if you can pull yourself away from the golden sand beaches and the enticing crystalline blue waters.

There are caves and hidden valleys to explore and the main street will provide many shops to explore and one of the most popular purchases on the island is the colorful sea shells, which are actually imported to the island and not local shells. The food on the island is amazing and traditional Greek food can be had along with many new contemporary dishes as well. It is advisable to avoid drinking the water though as even the ice cubes on the island are provided through a specialized company. The traditional Ouzo can be had in most taverns along with an assortment of beers and wines.

If you plan to vacation on Skiathos Island there are many modern hotels available on the island and most offer a panoramic view of the Aegean Sea. Transportation on the island can be had by bus, taxi, motorbike or car. The island does offer rentals of the motorbikes and cars for personal use while visiting the island. To really explore the island it is recommended that you rent a motorbike or moped as this will enable you to access places that cars cannot. Helmets are also required for those who choose to rent a motorbike.
