Scott Weiland Misses His Mark with Christmas Album

I’ve always been a fan of Scott Weiland. Whether he’s fronting the rock band Stone Temple Pilots or wailing it out with Velvet Revolver, fans know that the effort is always top notch and the result is something awesome.

Well, Weiland is back. But this time he’s bringing Christmas cheer. I’m all for a Christmas album, if you’ve got a great singing voice for that type of music, but the reality is Weiland misses his mark and often times it comes across as if some random person is karaoking as Scott Weiland.

On much of this album, the grunge rocker pays tribute to a Bing Crosby like style by mimicking the classics that the legendary crooner made famous. The problem here is there is only one Bing Crosby and Weiland actually does an injustice by trying to pay homage to him.

During the songs “O Holy Night,” “Silent Night” and “Happy Christmas and Many More” the background music is similar to a Jamaican style song that doesn’t really fit the theme. If I’m in Jamaica during Christmas, I certainly don’t want to check out a karaoke bar.

Weiland’s take on “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” sounds as if he’s channeling Sammy Davis Jr. by singing out of the side of his mouth. He tries too hard on this song and portrays an image that fans aren’t used to.

This holiday album was first inspired by the singer’s appearance on Jay Leno’s show when he sang “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” The inspiration came way of Frank Sinatra’s legendary 1957 version of the song. As much as I love Weiland as a grunge rocker I’m not too hip on him as a holiday singer. There are a lot better albums like this available and, unfortunately, Weiland is at his best fronting rock bands, and not bringing Christmas cheer. What’s next, Ozzy orating Twas the Night Before Christmas?
