Roddick’s Australian Exit Latest Disappointment

Andy Roddick’s bid at the Australian Open is over. The American retired in his second round match against Lleyton Hewitt due to a hamstring injury. Though he was bounced because of injuries, the Grand Slam performance adds to the pain of Roddick and American tennis in general. Since winning the U.S. Open in 2003, Roddick has been unable to win a major title. In fact, he has only reached the semifinals seven times at a Grand Slam since winning that title. Here is a look at those seven times.

2004 Wimbledon

Roddick was the number two seed at Wimbledon in 2004. He had a fairly easy path to the final as he didn’t have to face a top 10 seed until he met number one Roger Federer for the championship. It was actually a pretty good final. Roddick took the first set and kept it close the rest of the way. Federer won the pivotal third set in a tiebreaker before taking the match in four.

2005 Australian Open

This was the second of four career semifinal appearances in Australia. Roddick had some impressive wins in the tournament to get as far as he did. However, he ran out of luck in the semifinals when the third seeded Hewitt upset him.

2005 Wimbledon

Roddick was once again the number two seed at Wimbledon. Once again, he met his end against Federer in the final. This match wasn’t nearly as competitive as their previous final. Federer won in straight sets to continue his dominance over his rival.

2006 U.S. Open

The ninth seeded Roddick benefited from a lot of upsets to reach the final in 2006. However, he once again faced his nemesis in the final. As is usually the case with he and Federer, Roddick was on the losing end. The final went four sets.

2007 Australian Open

Roddick was impressive in the Australian Open, including an easy straight set win in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, he met Federer in the semifinals and once again failed to win. Roddick lost in straight sets and won just six total games.

2009 Australian Open

The seventh seeded Roddick was awfully impressive in Australia in 2009. He scored a quarterfinal upset over defending champion Novak Djokovic to reach the semifinals. However, he faced Federer once again there and came up short.

2009 Wimbledon

This was as close as Roddick has come to winning a Grand Slam since his 2003 win. He was the sixth seed but made a surprising run to the final after beating third seed Andy Murray in the semifinals. In the final match he fought an epic with Federer. However, he came up on the losing end of a 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3, 16-14.
