As I mentioned in another review, my wife decided to try out a new gordita dinner kit she found last night while shopping at our local Wal-mart. The kit did not include meat so she ended up in their meat section and ultimately ended up buying both chicken breast strips and steak strips from the Tyson Grilled & Ready Brand.
Her decision to purchase both of these products was the result of two things. First, we have purchased meat from Wal-mart before and found if it isn’t brand name, it isn’t any good. Also, the Tyson products happened to be on sale and she was able to buy both packages for just $5.
When I saw she purchased this, I had some doubts. Last Thanksgiving, we tried another product from this brand and weren’t overly thrilled with the overall quality. But, because of the price, I was more than willing to give it a second chance.
I won’t say we were rewarded for our generosity but they did prove to be better than I was expecting them to be.
There were a couple things I liked both about the chicken breast and the steak. One of the main ones was both were surprisingly tender. I have purchased other brands like this that were very tough and required a steak knife; something that would not have been very practical since the meat was being use for gorditas. This meat, however, was tender enough to simply bite into or cut with a fork.
The meat was also higher in quality than I was expecting (mostly as a result of the last time I tried a Tyson product). I wouldn’t say it was the best meat I have ever tasted. But, it at least tasted like meat and not something pretending to be beef or chicken.
My only real complaint about this product was the same complaint I had last time I tried something from this brand. Even though the meat seemed to be higher in quality this time around, there were still quite a few chunks that seemed to be nothing but fat. This was true both about the chicken and the steak.
As a result, I would only recommend either of these products if you happen to find them for around the same price (or cheaper) than I did. If you have to spend too much more than that, I would recommend looking for something different.
