Oishii in Houston, Texas: A Very Short Overview

Oishii used to be one of Houston’s little kept secrets as far as sushi restaurants go, but it made its way in the mainstream world mainly by word of mouth and no adverstising and it stayed true to its initial vibe. In fact, the venue kept their food fresh, the prices low and it did not expand one bit so now there is always a wait but it is worth it.

The restaurant is small and I think it can barely hold 100 customers and the bar area is nice, the decor on the wall is a little busy as it has a lot of different art work on it. The place is located in the Greenway Plaza area at 3764 Richmond Avenue and their business hours are from Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. and it stays closed on Sunday, and their happy hour is from Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

And speaking of happy hour even though they do not have an extensive list for it, the prices are unbeatable and the food is good. A domestic beer comes at $1.25 and the imported one at $1.75, sake is $3 and wine is $4, and for the food you get to choose for $4 one and get the second one free. Some of the food items are the spicy salmon roll, the pork egg roll, the spinach roll, the dynamite roll and the soup and salad combination just to name a couple.

Of course you have to try their sushi as well, which the average price is $1 a piece, or go with one of their rolls such as the Houston maki which is shrimp tempura, eel and cucumber roll with spicy mayonnaise and eel sauce for $7 for five pieces or the Oishii maki which shrimp & asparagus with chopped baked mussel on top for $6.50 for six pieces, or the Cajun maki which is fried oyster and avocado with chili for $4 for five pieces.

The service is good and fast, I would give it a B+, and most of the waitstaff has been there for years, while the food and pricing get an overall A. The only downside to this restaurant is parking, there are five spaces in front and then on the side there is some more but on peak hours it is hard to get in, so that gets a C-.
