How to Have a Safe and Happy Halloween!

There is a light chill in the air, and as you look through your screen door you can see them running quickly toward your door. There are five of them. A ghost, a ghoul, two witches, and a zombie fireman. You reach down to the table next to you to grab your supplies before they get to you. You are ready for this day. “Trick-or-Treat!” The children yell in unison. Their eyes watch carefully to see what you are dropping into their bags. “Thank You!” they say as they run away quickly to the next house.

Halloween is here and it’s time to prepare for those little goblins who will be running swiftly through the neighborhood all night. If you have a little witch of your own who will be Trick-or-Treating this Halloween there are a few things to remember in order to have a safe and fun Trick-or-Treat night.

Costume Safety

When it comes to picking out a costume it can be tempting to just grab the costume that your child loves the most or to hand make a costume that is details and extravagant. But when it comes to Halloween costumes whether you buy them or make them there are some very important things to take into consideration before making a decision.

The costume should fit the child well.

Regular athletic shoes or any proper fitting shoes are important.

Check that there are no parts of the costume that could trip your child, because he or she will be running a lot.

Ensure that there are no sharp accessories or costume parts that could hurt the child if she or he were to trip and fall.

If possible use face paint instead of a mask. If you use a mask check to make sure that the eye holes are big and will not cause the child to have any “blind spots”.

Make sure that your child can move properly, that the costume isn’t restricting their movements.

Trick-or-Treating Safety

Now that the costume is on and your child is ready to get started. There is so much free candy out there waiting and it is a very exciting time for kids. Before you get caught up in the commotion that is going on in your neighborhood go over these trick-or-treating safety rules.

Go out with your child. If it is not possible for you to take your child get a trusted adult or teenager to assist your child.

Older kids who go without an adult should only go in large groups with friends.

Plan a route in your neighborhood that you are familiar with. Share the route with a family member who will not be going out.

Make sure that your child is wearing reflective materials and has a flashlight or glowstick.

Provide a cell phone for older kids if possible.

For smaller children refresh them on safety rules. (no running, look before crossing the street, don’t go with strangers…etc.)

Never allow your child to go into a strangers home ALWAYS accept candy at the front door.

Candy Safety

Every one has made it home safely and it is time to start enjoying all that candy that has been calling their names all night. Before allowing them to get into the candy it is important to do a quick safety check of the candy.

Take out any open candy or homemade treats.

For small children remove choking hazards.

The most important thing to remember this Halloween is to have a great time and to ensure that your child has a great time. Safety is very important but do not make your child feel scared to go out. Enjoy yourself this trick-or-treat night and stay safe!
