How Skateboarding Will Help You to Become Independent

Skateboarding was the pastime that I chose growing up, ball sports never worked out for me. Although I could have done well in school sports, I slowly lost interest in most of them and started skateboarding. Initially, I was only skating to be “cool”, and to be accepted, but I came to learn that this was not the route to go. Soon, I found myself falling in love with skateboarding, and I no longer cared about being cool. Eventually, I became an independent person and people began to accept for who I was, not who I was trying to be.

Skateboarding is such an independent sport for many reasons, one being that there are no set rules for it. The only restriction on skateboarding is where you can actually skate. If it were more of a sport, there would be rules and a time limit, no skateboarder wants that. Another reason the art form is independent is that it allows you to be who you want to be. When you see a group of skateboarders, one may be listening to rap music, while another could be listening to heavy metal. Skateboarding is all about expressing yourself and who you are. In fact, skateboarders tend to express themselves in the wildest ways. It is not about following your fellow team members, or any kind of team-work.

There are some things that can make skateboarding seem mainstream, and less independent. For instance, there are plenty of leagues and competitions for skateboarding, but these things are not required. I actually don’t prefer participating in competitions because of the pressure that it puts on me; I only go to competitions to hang out with friends and skate. Sometimes they just take out the fun of skateboarding. I love skateboarding because it gave me a sense of identity in the world. I look at it now as a way of expressing myself.

As far as how skateboarding can actually make you independent, there are plenty of ways. Think of the time and effort that needs to be put into skateboarding to become an expert at it. Most sports require practice, but skateboarding takes a lot more. Most other sports require a team of some sort, with skateboarding; you can skate alone or with friends. You can also choose how you want to skate. Whether it is with a longboard or a regular skateboard, there are many ways to ride. When one lands a trick after practicing for a while, the sense of accomplishment in wonderful.

Overall, skateboarding is a universal art form that is growing. It is becoming more socially accepted and it is a great way for anyone to express themselves. When one sees a group of skateboarders, they are usually of mixed races; race simply does not matter with this sport. Skateboarding will help one to realize that it is okay to express yourself when they want to.
