The End of an Era: The End of the Soap Opera “All My Children”

I was saddened to learn about the cancellation of one of my favorite soap operas growing up, All My Children. I saw it coming years ago when the television networks started canceling other soaps but never did I see this coming with All My Children. This soap has been on for many years, perhaps much longer than the ones that had already been canceled. I remember watching this show with my mother growing up and I am a bit heartbroken to see the ending of this show. I admit that I have not watched this show much in the past few years but I do keep up with whatever news there is about the show. I do know that this show was one of my mother’s favorites and if she was alive today, I have a feeling that she would be heartbroken to see this show end.

All My Children was one of those shows that endured and grew over the years. They were the ones who took on some major and controversial story lines. Most of the storylines featured the one character everyone either loved or hated: Erica Kane. Susan Lucci has played this character from day one and forever will be known as Erica Kane. I knew the time was coming for the last episode but I did not realize it was finale until I caught the news on Friday, September 23, 2011. The news was reporting the end of an era of All My Children and what the last episode was. Right then and there, I felt intense sadness and had to post on Facebook about what I was feeling. I can’t believe that this show is over on national television but I have read that there is a chance that this show will be returning online.

As I have said, I have not watched much of All My Children over the years but I have stayed aware of what was going on and so forth. I watched when the character of Jesse Hubbard returned and other times I watched when there was some major story line going on. I will always remember this show because it was one of my mother’s favorites and I always treasure the times that I spent with my mother. All My Children did not deserve the way that it was treated by the television network, ABC, but at least from what I saw of the last episode, it went out with a bang. All My Children may be gone now, but her legacy will endure for as long as she is remembered. We now have something else that we do not want to happen, but another soap opera, One Life to Live, will be bowing out next year, which will be another sad day.
