Snow Day Game Ideas for Outdoor Fun and Exercise in the Snow

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow the song says, but what to do after the snow has fallen and school and work are cancelled for day? Let it snow and give some of these snow day game ideas a try for some fun and exercise in the snow.

Snow Day Easter Egg Hunt

Here’s a wintry spin on a spring time game that children adore – hide and hunt for colorful ice cubes in the snow. Whip up a batch of colorful ice cubes by putting a few drops of food coloring in water, then freezing it in ice cube trays. Hide the colored ice cubes in the yard just like you would hide Easter Eggs, the colors will contrast against the stark white snow and be easy even for the smallest of children to discover.

Use old Easter baskets or gallon sized plastic ice cream containers (the kind with handles) to place Ester egg ice cubes in. Space the colored ice cubes out so you and the kids can get in some outdoor exercise while hunting for ‘eggs’.

Snow Day Sidewalk Games

Any game that you and your family enjoy playing on the sidewalk using sidewalk chalk can be played on the sidewalk in the snow. Place water in a spray bottle and add food coloring to the water to color it. Use the colored water to outline sidewalk games like hopscotch and tic-tac-toe. The colored water can also be used to ‘paint’ graffiti style designs into snow banks to help the kids stay occupied and active during snow days, join in the fun with the kids and show them how its done old-school style.

Build a Snow Fort

Shovel snow (great workout!) into about a five foot high mound, then you and the kids hollow out the middle of the snow mound. Spritz water all over the outside of the snow mound so it will freeze and re-enforce the snow mound so it won’t cave and you will have created a snow fort that will lasts as long as the snow lasts. Create a couple of these snow forts on opposite sides of the yard with an open roof design so kids (and adults) can hide inside and pop up for tossing snowballs.
