Quick and Easy Tips to Produce Interesting Black and White Photographs

If you take photographs, it is likely that you like to experiment with different styles. An artistic style of photograph is black and white. However, only having a photograph in black and white is not necessarily artistic. Use this tips to help make your black and white photography artistic and beautiful.

Focus on the Subject

Color can be a distraction from the subject. If there are bright colors around the object, they can draw the eye away from the object. Having a photograph in black and white allows you to focus on the subject. The important part is to make sure that light does not upstage the subject of the photo and to try to make it so lines point to the subject of the photograph.

Use Contrast

Contrast can help bring out the subject of a photo. While you were warned to not let light upstage the photograph, a bright light in back of a dark object that allows the object to be the subject can make a great photo. Another great photograph technique can be to edit contrast after the photo is taken, still keeping the photo in black and white. However, the different contrasts can be subtle differences between colors.

Use Patterns and Textures

If there are patterns and textures, use them in your black and white photography. Colors draw the eye in color photography and drown out patterns and texture. However, black and white photography allows patterns to show. Use them to enhance the subject or the background of black and white photos. Be sure that you do not use patterns on both or textures on both the subject and background. However, using a pattern on one and a texture on another may work as long as one is subtle.

Be Creative With Lights

If a light is shining on a subject in an interesting way, try photographing it in black and white. This allows for the photo to be seen in a different way than a shining light on a color subject. If you are using lights to illuminate a subject, then you can try different angles and intensities of the light on a black and white photograph to give different views of the subject.
