Passport to India in New York: Bombay Indian Cuisine

Being a New Yorker, we sometimes forget all that is available to us. It’s when we get a chance to see the city through the eyes of a newcomer, you walk away with a different perspective. On a recent Saturday spent with a client, we decided to recap her apartment search over lunch.

Where should we go? The inevitable question. It’s the endless choices that aren’t. How about Indian? Works for me. We decided to try Bombay Indian Cuisine in Midtown on 9th Ave. It’s not the largest spot but you know the saying; “Big things come in small packages.” This place didn’t disappoint.

My group decided to share an appetizer and each would order an entree. Our enthusiastic and very sweet waiter suggested the samosas. Sounds good. Our main course? Shrimp Saag, Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Vindaloo, Basmati Rice and of course Naan (Onion and Coconut) Don’t mock the coconut until you try it.

The Samosas were outstanding. Crispy on the outside and inside a surprise of ground beef surprise assortmed spices. I’ve never tried meat samosas before. Dipped in the various chutneys, yummy!!…Score 1 for 1.

Next our entrees. My Shrimp Saag featured large Prawns swimming in a creamy spinach sauce with a little kick. Combined with the coconut naan, it’s the perfect combination of sweet and heat. Try it, I think you’ll like it. Everyone else seemed to be pleased with their choices and we all got a taste from each plate. Score 2 for 2.

Luckily we sat down when we did, because the placed filled up in no time. I have to give a round of applause to our waiter. He was lovely man and worked the entire place by himself. Always with a smile and a kind heart. Let me share that many of these lunch entrees are between $7.95 – $9.95.

If you blink, you’ll miss this spot so keep your eyes wide open. You won’t want to pass it up.
