It would seem that peace and quiet in the Cyrus household may have once again gone up in smoke. Video footage was recently leaked out into the media outlets that shows singer and former Disney Diva Miley Cyrus calling herself a “stoner” after her friend Kelly Osbourne delivers a Bob Marley cake to the 19-year-old Cyrus. In the video, Miley proclaims “You know you’re a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake.”
When the footage hit the Internet, word started buzzing and Osbourne took to Twitter to defend her friend. “It makes me sick that Miley Cyrus’ so called ‘friends’ would sell her out and lead people 2 believe she is someone that she is not,” tweeted Ozzy’s daughter. According to Osbourne, the cake and Miley’s subsequent comments were meant to be jokes in reference to the young singer’s incident with a legal herb salvia last year, just a couple of days after her 18th birthday.
With the winds of controversy starting to pick up speed, the Miley’s camp has a few options with which they can defuse the time bomb that is Miley’s apparent admission to smoking marijuana. While Kelly’s tweets can be seen as friend trying to defend another friend, they likely won’t do much in the court of public opinion. So how can Team Miley tackle this latest smoky predicament?
Ignore It, Hope It All Goes Away – Sometimes the best way to make a story disappear is to do nothing about it. In a 24-hour news cycle, there are pretty good chances that this story could just fall off the radar when the next big story hits the wires tomorrow. The first incident with Miley, a bong, and some herbal substance is likely to have come as much more of a surprise and shock, after all. This time, Miley wasn’t caught partaking, but rather just joking about it, which is an important distinction, and could very well help to squash this drama much more quickly.
Admit She’s Inhaled – Miley’s now in her final year as a teenager, and she’s been a working professional in show business for years. For intents and purposes, she’s an adult; a grown woman. One potential way to diffuse this situation would be to take ownership of her lifestyle choices and admit that she has at least on occasion smoked a substance or two that some may find offensive. Sometimes, the best defense is a strong offense. By admitting to sometimes dabbling with the greener stuff, perhaps she can show it’s no big deal, because she herself doesn’t see it that way.
Regardless of how Cyrus and her team decide to handle this incident, it’s becoming increasingly clear that she’s in need of crossing over from the days of a teen idol and starlet and into a more adult direction with her career. The question will remain whether or not her fans will go along with her, or whether they will be too turned off to a more grown-up Miley to buy into her new persona.
