Lions Welcome Back Kevin Smith on Career Night

The Detroit Lions have welcomed Kevin Smith back to the roster after yesterday’s tremendous performance. Smith who was originally drafted by the lions in 2008 from Central Florida and was the starting running back for Detroit till a knee injury in 2009 side lined him for the rest of the season. Smith only played 6 games in 2010 where he only carried the ball 34 times for a total of 133 yards rushing before finally being released by the Lions. Smith tried out for several teams this year but landed nowhere until Detroit in a desperate spot decided to take another look at their former starter.

Detroit has already lost rookie Mikel Leshoure before the season started to injury along with starting running back Javid Best who has now suffered 2 major concussions during the season and there is questions on how soon he could come back. Detroit tried to trade Jerome Harrison to the Philadelphia Eagles in the hopes of pulling Ronnie Brown over to the Lions roster but the deal fell through when Harrison failed his physical and later was informed that he had a brain tumor. Detroit not only lost the chance at Brown but also lost Harrison for the year in one diagnosis.

Sunday when the lions took Ford Field they looked to take on one of the worst run defense in the NFL with a skeleton crew of running backs. Kevin Smith though didn’t start became the starter once again as the Lions won 49-35 behind the newly energized running game from Smith. Smith finished the game with 159 yards on the ground, 71 yards receiving and a total of 3 touchdowns which was a career day for Smith. Smith has been now labeled the starter for Thursday’s thanksgiving game against the Packers and Smith has quite a bit now to give thanks for.
