Jorge Posada Needs to Retire

Watching Jorge Posada’s career take off right before my very eyes, it’s sad to say he needs to do the right thing now and retire. He can go out with some dignity like the Kardashians did when they cancelled their show. Wait, it’s still on? Oh — .

Posada was recently benched by manager Joe Girardi (again) and it seems as if this time it’s for good. So far this season, Posada is hitting .230 with nine home runs and 31 runs batted in. Posada is having all sorts of issues hitting right handed pitchers, posting a miserable .103 average while he is hitting .263 against lefties. An even scarier number is that from the seventh inning and on, Jorge is hitting .173, although I do use the term hitting lightly. Did I also mention he’s 39 and will be turning 40 in mid August?

In limited time this year, Eric Chavez has channeled his inner 2001 and is hitting .304 this year, which makes him a much better option to DH. Even Andruw Jones is hitting slightly better than Posada this year.

As it stands right now, Posada is eating up a roster spot. Even when rosters expand on September 1, Posada is still eating up a big spot that can be used to give a young player some experience during a lopsided game, or if the Yankees happen to clinch early. The last time Posada was relevant was 2009 when he hit .285 with 22 home runs and 81 runs batted in. During his 2010 season, Posada hit .248 with 18 home runs and 57 runs batted in.

I hate to say it, as I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Posada, but it’s time to hang ‘em up. Watching that key core group of Yankees make their way to the baseball record books was something I will never forget. He has had an amazing career which boasts five All Star appearances and five Silver Slugger awards to go along with his five World Series rings, but if he wanted to do the right thing, he should put his away his pride and call it a wonderful career.
