With Jennifer Lopez saying “adios” to husband Marc Anthony followed by rumors of Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith speeding toward splitsville, Hollywood watchers have been divided into the naive “Who knew?” crowd and cynical “We saw it coming” camp. Celebrities typically portray their marriages as perfect until the moment they step up to the mic and admit, “Guess we weren’t doing so hot after all.”
An exception to this rule is Gwyneth Paltrow, who has been dropping hints about trouble in her marital paradise for years to whatever reporters will talk to her.
Most recently, the wife of Cold Play’s Chris Martin confided at the Venice Film Festival, “I am a great romantic — but I also think you can be a romantic and a realist. Life is complicated and long and I know people that I respect and admire and look up to who have had extra-marital affairs.”
The “Contagion” actress even admitted to being blemished herself, though she enigmatically used the royal “we” in this confession. “It’s like we’re flawed – we’re human beings and sometimes you make choices that other people are going to judge. That’s their problem but I think that the more I live my life, the more I learn not to judge people for what they do.”
Whether Paltrow was commenting on the behavior of friends or her own marriage remains muddled. A couple of years ago, rumors swirled that husband Chris Martin was having an affair with actress Kate Bosworth, whom — he reportedly told his wife — reminded him of a younger version of her. Gwynnie Jr. (Gwynette?) and the rocker were reportedly seen getting cozy at a U2 concert. Now that the “Blue Crush” actress has broken up with boyfriend Alexander Skarsgard, a sighting of Bosworth leaving a Coldplay concert in Los Angeles last month fueled rumors that the two could be rekindling their romance.
As for her own cheating heart, the GOOP blogster said reports she was having an affair with “Glee” star Matthew Morrison were rubbish after cameras caught the duo dining together last April at a restaurant. The “Country Strong” actress insisted the two were just buds. “He’s a great friend,” she said. “I adore him.” Despite her denial, the svelte star may have hoped the racy rumors would rankle her rock star husband. (Surely she knew her guilty-faced photo hiding behind a silk scarf couldn’t hurt.)
Meanwhile, Paltrow may have revealed her minimal regard for Martin at her Venice Film Festival press conference when she cooed, “I have two fantastically delightful children and a very nice husband.” Though nice is a kinder word than horrid, it is a namby pamby adjective better suited for church ladies than husbands.
In the most recent issue of GOOP, Paltrow’s photo essay from her recent visit to Venice has nary a shot of her husband, who was MIA from the glam gathering.
That Paltrow and her hubbie are rarely seen together has always been a hint their relationship is rocky. Martin’s recent appearance at a Coach dinner honoring his wife (who is the company’s so-called “face”) may have been an effort to convince the media and fans they are still cool as a couple. Yet a split-screen photo of the pair captures them separately, eerily foreshadowing a literal separation could be lurking around the corner.
If the duo decide to divorce, few people will be surprised, including Paltrow herself. She recently told Elle magazine, “Sometimes it’s hard being with someone for a long time. We go through periods that aren’t all rosy. I always say, life is long and you never know what’s going to happen.”
