How to Do with Out

KING JAMES BIBLE

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

DOING WITHOUT was the valuable lesson that I was taught when I was a child! My Mom stayed home and devoted her life to us kids and my Dad worked outside the home. Not that my Mom did not have outlets because she did have her poetry to work on in her spare time. At any rate, in that day and age it made a man feel like less of a man to have his wife working. I wonder how it affects our men of today!

My first bike….NOT

At any rate there were many times when we had to learn to do without! I never even had my very own bike. It was handed down from my sister, to my brother, and, then when it finally got to me, my Dad had to weld the frame back together! Yes, and still as I look back on those days, I feel that those days were indeed THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE.

MR. FIX IT.

I used to call my Dad ‘Mr. Fix it!” He fixed everything! He was so organized and his garage looked and still looks cleaner than most kitchens nowadays! Dad talked to me about everything and taught me valuable Bible lessons! I loved watching my Dad paint, fix things, refinish the wooden floors, etc! He put so much pride in everything that he did. Even to this day whenever I paint I think of Dad. He made everyday chores fun! His love for working around the house and positive attitude amazed me! He always either whistled or sang while he worked! He was such a happy go lucky kind of guy and still is to this day! He just didn’t believe in anything “outside the box” such as the fact that I could have done so much more with my music back then! Dad had such a humble attitude and passed that on to us Children!

Dad’s Buddy

Since my Mom was a bit of a home body, my sister was busy with her piano lessons and my brother wanted to spend most of his time with his friends, I was the designated buddy for my Dad. He took me everywhere! Fishing, boating, to visit my precious Grandmother, frog hunting, hiking, gardening! Wow! What great times we had! He taught me how to harmonize with him even before I knew how to talk. That is why to this day I can sing much better than I can actually talk!!! LOL

I remember his slogan! Never enter a room without giving your Daddy a big hug! Wow! I’m getting teary eyed now! He constantly either whistled or sang throughout the day! He firmly believed in the old slogan! Whistle while you work!!! Thank Goodness my husband is hard of hearing because when I am working in the kitchen if I am too hoarse to sing I whistle a tune! I just can’t be quiet!!

Steering the boat

In that day and age especially in the small town where I grew up, and in the factory where my Dad worked, very few people could afford boats! Why then could my Dad afford a boat! You might have already guessed this one! It was because he fixed everything so that we could get by on very little money! I remember the first time he let me steer that boat! There was nothing like it! I felt like I myself was actually flying! Wow! What good childhood memories! Even to this day in my mind, I can remember the feeling from the thump of the waves under the boat and the cool breeze off the lake. I felt such a powerful feeling knowing that I was controlling this marvelous vessel!

The most valuable lesson

The most valuable lesson I came away with is striving to do without all the junk that is offered to us on TV. In fact now this is something very important, I feel that it is a CHALLENGE to try to do without instead of always buying new things! I feel like I am actually beating the system so to speak! The system that wants you to run out and buy new junk when you still have junk that you can make use of at home! That challenge leads to one of those NATURAL HIGHS that one gets when they feel that they have accomplished something great! Perhaps that is why I love to watch “Man verses Wild!”

My challenge to you

My challenge to you today is that you take baby steps in trying to do without so that you too can feel that fantastic feeling of beating the system and doing without all that junk. Hay, spend the extra money on buying more vegetables!!! Now vegetables are something we CAN’T do without!!!

Love to all my friends and fans here on AC!!! Thank you to Sivaramakrishnan Ananthanarayanan,
