From Cozy to Festive: Five Tips for Winter Home Decorating

Winter is a time to relax and reflect upon the year’s accomplishments, but it can also be a time to celebrate. With this in mind, here are five ideas to spice up your home for the holiday season.

1. Go for Cozy

If you’re like me, you might see winter as an opportunity to lounge around and enjoy the comfort of a warm fire and some hot chocolate. If this is the case, then I have a few ideas for you. First of all, if you have a fireplace, make that area worthy of spending much more time in. If you celebrate Christmas, hang your stockings early. Alternatively, invest in that warm-color area rug you’ve been putting off buying.

2. Go for Chill

Do you describe yourself as “cool” instead of “warm”? If so, fill your home with blues and whites. Make paper snowflakes and other craft cut-outs, and hang them at random throughout your home. Buy candles with light, refreshing aromas, and let them stand in the middle of things, not hidden away. Guests will marvel at how you keep your cool!

3. Go for Earthy

Take those old curtains down and replace them with warm, earthen shades. While you’re at it, place some inexpensive candle-style lights in the window (just be sure to avoid fire hazards!). Buy some new houseplants and display them proudly by decorating them creatively with a personal touch. Follow these steps and you should feel more at home in no time!

4. Go for Festive

If you like to spend all season immersed in the spirit of the holidays, then don’t be afraid to make your home colorful and lively. Hang multicolored lights (in small doses) around the edges of ledges or houseplants, and feature a centerpiece of some kind (be it a tree, a candelabra, or a piece of antique furniture.

5. Go for Themed

If you or your family are fond of certain popular characters, themes, or ideas, let it show by filling your home with touches of their influence. Do some arts and crafts with a loved one; for example, cut out and decorate banners reading “Peace,” “Love,” or “Reindeer Crossing.” These creative touches can go a long way toward making your home a fun environment through the cold season.
