Break Down of 2012 Australian Open Women’s Draws

Top half-top draw

Potential 4th round between Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Jankovic. That one should be great to watch because both of them are huge unknowns at this moment, both have not be in great from as of late. Potential 4th round: Kim Clijsters vs. Li Na Projected Quarter-Final: Caroline Wozniacki vs. Li Na, ANOTHER re-match from last year’s Aussie Open.

This is a very opportunistic draw of the section because ANYBODY can make it through. They are all questionable players. I would say the woman who has the best chances of making it through this section is Li Na, just based on the fact the she reached the final in Sydney this weekend. So, she does have the momentum on her side.

Bottom half-Top Draw

Projected 4th round: Victoria Azarenka vs. Peng Shaui. BUT, watch out for the possible 3rd round match-up between Peng Shaui and Flavia Pennetta. Both play an incredibly tough 3-setter at the US Open last year, where Pennetta edged out the victory. Projected 4th round: Francesca Schiavone vs. Agnieszka Radwanska. Projected quarter-final: Victoria Azarenka vs Agnieszka Radwanska. IF the seedings workout, the Semi in the section of the draw would be Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka.

Top Half-Bottom Draw;

Potential 3rd round: Dominika Cibulkova vs. Serena Williams. Potential 4th round: Vera Zvonereva vs. Serena Williams. Potential 3rd round: Sabine Lisicki vs Svetlana Kuznetsova. Potential 4th round: Maria Sharapova vs. Sabine Lisicki. Projected Quarter-Final: Serena Williams vs Maria Sharapova.

The reason I mention 3rd round match-up’s here is because there are chances for upsets, or at least tough matches. Cibulkova is always a threatening player, as is Kuznetsova. So, just putting it out there, that there is potential for possible upsets

Bottom Half-Bottom Draw:

Potential 3rd round: Samantha Stosur vs. Nadia Petrova. This has the potential to be a great match-up due to the fact that they played a great 3-setter at the US Open last year. The final score was: 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 7-5, where Stosur just pulled out the victory, and eventually went on to win the Open. Potential 4th round: Samantha Stosur vs. Marion Bartoli. Should be a great match as well, and Bartoli does have the potential to pull through. She ended off the year in great form, and started the year in great form at the Hopman Cup. Potential 3rd round: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs. Ana Ivanovic. Looking for that to be great a match, and it is truly hard to predict the winner of that one. Projected 4th round: Petra Kvitova vs. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Projected Quarter-Final: Samatha Stosur vs. Petra Kvitova Projected Semi-Final: Petra Kvitova vs. Maria Sharapova.

The women’s side is much more harder to predict than the men’s side. And, I do believe that there will be more upsets on the women’s side than on the men’s side. I also can’t wait to see all the potential re-matches we have from last year’s Australian Open and US Open. I know I’ve said it before, and I will say it again, this year’s Aussie Open will be great!
