A Review of Disturbed’s ‘The Lost Children.’

Disturbed’s “The Lost Children” is billed as B-sides and rarities. When you think of B-sides you think of songs that didn’t quite make the cut or are found on the, well, B-side of the album. This is the case with “The Lost Children” as each song can be found as bonus tracks on previous albums or, in a couple cases, covers of other artists such as Faith No More and Judas Priest.

That’s not to say “The Lost Children” isn’t worth having; it’s a nice compilation of songs that may not be found on a greatest hits album. The timing of this effort is especially crucial as it could, in theory, be the last recordings of Disturbed for a long time, if ever.

Front man David Draiman said that Disturbed is taking an indefinite hiatus with the reason being the state of the music industry and the demise of metal and hard rock. Although I don’t necessarily agree with Draiman I do respect the band’s decision to take a break.

However, the music industry, albeit a pop driven one, is for the most part pretty healthy. There are many great metal and hard rock acts; Avenged Sevenfold, Megadeth and Anthrax to name a few.

Like Metallica and Aerosmith, Draiman and Disturbed need to restructure their brand to stay competitive in the industry. I’m not saying I want to see them singing a song like Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” but they could take this opportunity to evolve and come back stronger.

Nevertheless, if you are a fan of Disturbed and fear the worst, “The Lost Children” will certainly be the cure for all that is “ooh, waa ah ahh ah” in the world.
