The Penn State Child Rape Scandal

This Penn State scandal has upset many including me. I CANNOT get over the number of times the sexual abuse could have been stopped. I am appalled at how many adults could have stopped this, but did not. I am SICKENED by the entire Penn State athletic staff. I am angry.

Jerry Sandusky was a coach at Penn State for many years. He started in 1969. He wasn’t the head coach. These big league teams have many coaches. He was the defensive line coach. 1977 he founds a group to help at risk boys called the Second Mile. He founded this. He didn’t just work with a group that was already in business. Makes you think, doesn’t it?

Starting in 1994 according to the testimony to a grand jury, Sandusky would befriend these boys aged eight to thirteen, take them here and there, give them presents, take them to locker rooms at Penn State and sexually assault in the showers there.

The grand jury report lists the times and dates Sandusky meets each of the eight victims listed in that report. Sandusky has been charged with 40 counts based on those eight. Now there are up to 17 victims reported.

Just when you think this cannot get any more horrible, it does. The news stories reveal just how many times this could have been stopped. Boys could have been saved from being raped. Adults who knew did not report this to the police for whatever reasons. They put boys at the mercy of a sexual predator for that is what Sandusky is.

I am just going to quote from the article what happened.

1998: Victim 6 is taken into the locker rooms and showers when he is 11 years old. When Victim 6 is dropped off at home, his hair is wet from showering with Sandusky. His mother reports the incident to the university police, who investigate.

Detective Ronald Schreffler testifies that he and State College Police Department Detective Ralph Ralston, with the consent of the mother of Victim 6, eavesdrop on two conversations the mother of Victim 6 has with Sandusky. Sandusky says he has showered with other boys and Victim 6’s mother tries to make Sandusky promise never to shower with a boy again but he will not. At the end of the second conversation, after Sandusky is told he cannot see Victim 6 anymore, Schreffler testifies Sandusky says, ”I understand. I was wrong. I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won’t get it from you. I wish I were dead.”

Jerry Lauro, an investigator with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, testifies he and Schreffler interviewed Sandusky, and that Sandusky admits showering naked with Victim 6, admits to hugging Victim 6 while in the shower and admits that it was wrong.

The case is closed after then-Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar decides there will be no criminal charge.”

What????? An adult male admits to showering naked with a boy and there are no charges? He admits to hugging him and there are no charges?

This is not the only time adults failed and failed big time.

According to this same grand jury report, a janitor found Sandusky in one of Penn State Showers with a young boy pinned up against the wall while he did unspeakable things to him. He reported it to his boss.

Everyone stop the bus here. Let’s think about this.

You are a normal human being going about your business on a job. You walk into a shower that you are going to clean and find and adult man doing oral sex on a eight year old. What do you do? Tell your boss, or do you call the cops after putting a stop to the rape?

How did this janitor and his boss sleep at night after ignoring this child’s rape? Who does this? Who can walk in and see something this evil and do nothing but report it to your boss?

What kind of people are these?

Well, whatever kind of people these are, they are not the only ones of that race in Happy Valley. The grand jury report reveals another very upsetting incident. This one is big.

March 1, 2002: A Penn State graduate assistant enters the locker room at the Lasch Football Building. In the showers, he sees a naked boy, known as Victim 2, whose age he estimates to be 10 years old, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky. The graduate assistant tells his father immediately.”

Stop the bus again. A grad student assistant coach walks into the Penn State locker room and sees a sixty year old man having anal intercourse with a ten year old boy. First thing he does is go tell his dad.

Does he call the cops? NO.

Does he stop the rape? NO

He goes and tells his dad.

How old is the grad student? In his twenties perhaps? Think that is old enough to know what to do at such a time? I do.

What does this grad student, Mike McQueary, who had to be a twenty something year old man and his dad, John McQueary. do?

Not one stinking thing until the next day.

I wonder what else happened to that child that night.

March 2, 2002: In the morning, the graduate assistant calls Coach Joe Paterno and goes to Paterno’s home, where he reports what he has seen.

March 3, 2002: Paterno calls Tim Curley, Penn State Athletic Director to his home the next day and reports a version of what the grad assistant had said.

March 2002: Later in the month the graduate assistant is called to a meeting with Curley and Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz. The grad assistant reports what he has seen and Curley and Schultz say they will look into it.

March 27, 2002 (approximate): The graduate assistant hears from Curley. He is told that Sandusky‘s locker room keys are taken away and that the incident has been reported to The Second Mile. The graduate assistant is never questioned by university police and no other entity conducts an investigation until the graduate assistant testifies in Grand Jury in December 2010.

Spring 2007: During the 2007 track season, Sandusky begins spending time with Victim 1 weekly, having him stay overnight at his residence in College Township, Pa.

Spring 2008: Termination of contact with Victim 1 occurs when he is a freshman in a Clinton County high school. After the boy’s mother calls the school to report sexual assault, Sandusky is barred from the school district attended by Victim 1 from that day forward and the matter is reported to authorities as mandated by law.

Early 2009: An investigation by the Pennsylvania attorney general begins when a Clinton County, Pa. teen boy tells authorities that Sandusky has inappropriately touched him several times over a four-year period.”

Okay . . .

Mike McQueary , disregarding the ten year old boy he witnessed Sandusky raping, and his father, John McQueary, who also ignored this boy’s rape, waited until the next day to call the legendry coach of Penn State and report what Mike saw.

They didn’t call him that night.

They didn’t call the cops.

They and no one else knows who this ten year old boy is.

They waited until the NEXT MORNING to call the COACH.

Anyone else shocked here? Is this just me?

After all isn’t this how one should handle witnessing the rape of a child? You don’t call the cops. You don’t stop the rape. You go tell your dad and in the morning you and him call your coach.

Only in Happy Valley.

Coach Joe Paterno. Legend in his own time. Loved by all in Happy Valley and respected by many outside of Happy Valley.

There are a few things that need to be remembered when it comes to big named legendary college football coaches. They are gods in their own lands. They get whatever they want. What they say goes. When it comes to their football teams or anything that remotely touches their football teams, nothing goes unnoticed by these kinds of coaches. Nothing.

This coach with this kind of power now has a grad student and his father in his living room. These three sat down, and Mike told JoePa what he saw.

A grad student bring his dad to your house to report something he saw. The grad student is distraught over what he saw. Yet according to Jo Paterno all Mike McQueary told him was that he witnessed an incident in the shower of the locker room?

I’m not buying this. Not one bit. No.

You want me to believe that Joe didn’t look Mike in the face and say, “What kind of incident?”

No. I don’t believe it.

What happens next? What did this respected powerful coach do?

The grand jury report tells us. He called the athletic director.

Immediately? NO!! NOOOOO!!

He waited until the next night to call the athletic director. The next day.

Where is that child?

With all the courage and moral fortitude imaginable, Joe waits until the NEXT DAY to call his boss. The janitor at least called his boss that same stinking day.

What does Joe say about this today?

“Paterno said in a statement released on Sunday: ‘As my grand jury testimony stated, I was informed in 2002 by an assistant coach that he had witnessed an incident in the shower of our locker room facility. It was obvious that the witness was distraught over what he saw, but he at no time related to me the very specific actions contained in the grand jury report.’”

Joe knew enough to go to his boss. He knew enough to call the cops.

Not to worry. His boss, Tim Curley, Penn State Athletic Director calls the cops? Right?

No.

Tim Curley calls his boss, Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz.

They called the cops and reported the rape of this child?

No.

A MONTH later they meet with Mike McQueary and told him they would take care of it.

They took away Sandusky’s keys to the locker room.

Let’s stop for a moment.

This is 2002. A grown man, young man but grown man, witnesses a sixty year old former coach having anal sex with a ten year old boy. He calls his dad and they go see Joe Paterno the next morning where they didn’t tell him anything much at all.

Joe takes this information of an incident in the shower about which he knows no details and calls Tim Curley, Penn State Athletic Director. Don’t know what he told him. Joe says he didn’t know anything.

Tim Curley meets with his boss, Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz and tells him nothing since Joe knows nothing. Yet these men meet with Mike McQueary a MONTH later. Nothing urgent about the rape of a child. No stinking need to hurry.

Mike tells them what he saw. He must have told them more than Joe says he told him. We know that because Curley and Schultz are under arrest for failing to report child abuse and perjury to a grand jury.

If Joe Patemo was any kind of man, any kind of real human being at all, the entire mess would have gone public that day. That day.

He should have looked at Mike and his dad and said, “We have to call the authorities. When the police get here, you need to tell them everything.

John McQueary was any kind of man, he would have said, “Son, we have to go to the police and you must tell them everything.

If Mike McQueary was any kind of man, no one would have had to tell him to go to the police.

Tim Curley and Gary Schultz showed just what kind of men they were. They did not call the cops. They did not protect this child. They lied to a grand jury.

Happy Valley kind of men.

Cover that college.

Protect that football team at any cost.

There was cost.

Sandusky raped at least one more child that we know of. I am betting real money will find out that he raped many more than that one child in the years between 2002 when all these Penn State “men” did nothing but bury this shame and 2010 when this story finally broke.

Instead all these people did was go up the ladder. They covered their collective butts legally, but no one cared about that boy in the shower, nor all of the boys that were to follow.

Success with honor, Joe.
