Review of DAPtex Plus Window & Door Foam Sealant

DAPtex Plus Window & Door Foam Sealant is a spray insulation product designed specifically for sealing around windows and doors to prevent drafts. I recently tried this product to seal drafts around windows in an older home. DAPtex is a latex based product which differs from Great Stuff foam and similar products that are polyurethane based. By using a latex base, the product cleans up much easier from hands and other surfaces. Though easier to clean, DAPtex does not stay in place as well as Great Stuff due to the reduced stickiness.

DAPtex Plus Window & Door Foam Sealant comes in a spray can that provides a nozzle to aid in applying the product to small spaces. The product sprays with a consistency similar to whipped cream. As the product hardens it does expand, but the amount of expansion is minimal. When applying the product to a crack, fill the crack and allow it to begin to harden before wiping away the excess. As DAPtex is not an adhesive it cannot be used in multiple layers to fill a large gap. DAPtex is also difficult to place on the underside of objects as the product will often fall out of the opening. If looks are not a concern, masking tape can be placed over the product to hold it in place until it fully hardens. If you choose to remove the tape, do so carefully as the tape will tend to pull the product out of the crack.

Once fully cured, DAPtex still remains flexible. The bright white finished product can be painted to match the surrounding surfaces. Though the product instructions state that the cured product is toolable, it is difficult to sand or smooth the cured product without pulling it away from the crack it is sealing. I have found that it is best to smooth the DAPtex while it is curing rather than trying to smooth it after it is fully cured.

In general, DAPtex Plus Window & Door Foam Sealant is a useful product for its specific purpose of sealing around windows and doors. It is ideal for use around the interiors of windows and doors as excess product dropped onto walls or floors can be quickly wiped away without leaving a sticky residue.
