Math Activities with Pumpkin Seeds

You have carved your pumpkins. Now, what can you do with all those pumpkin seeds from carving pumpkins? How about dry them and use them for math.

Paper Plate Pumpkin Counting:

Supplies you will need: Paper Plates, Orange, Brown and Green Paint, Thick Marker, Dry Pumpkin Seeds Create several paper plate pumpkins. Write a number on each pumpkin. Give the children several pumpkin seeds and have them put the correct number of seeds on the pumpkins. This can be done throughout fall.

Pumpkins on the Fence
Supplies you will need: Egg Cartons, Scissors, Craft Sticks, Small Paper Pumkins, Marker Create the fence by gluing a small paper pumpkin to the top of a craft stick. Write a number under the pumpkin. Create at least 6 fence posts. Make a slit in the middle of the egg carton and slide the fence post pieces in. Have the children place the correct number of pumpkin seeds in the egg cup portion of the egg carton. Older child version. Cup one, have a pumpkin with a number, cup two an addition symbol, and in cup three another number. In the fourth cup have the children put the correct number of pumpkin seeds to solve the number sentence.

Not all children learn the same way. Some learn by doing. Pumpkin seeds are a great way to add a fall theme to your math work.
