Kim Kardashian’s Fairytale Divorce: What it Could Mean for Her Reality TV Franchise

Were you among the millions that watched “Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event”? I was. I watched most of the four hour, two day, epic event. It was like “Family Feud” meets “Bridezillas” meets “Keeping Up With The Kardashians.” The nuptials had all of our favorite reality television drama and scandals wrapped into one.

Throughout the show Khloe Kardashian Odom and Kim Kardashian herself made references to her being like Elizabeth Taylor. Liz famously was married eight times. Kim’s got two in the hole; we’ll see what happens. When I asked my mom what she thought of Kim Kardashian’s wedding to Kris Humphries ending in divorce after only 72 days, she said that she would have at least given them six months.

Fans meanwhile have flooded Kim’s blog to leave supportive comments. #ThingsLongerThanKimsMarriage has been a trending topic on twitter for the past three days. Comments on Yahoo’s OMG! celebrity site show that Dash supporters are downright angry. People feel duped. They suspended disbelief and bought into the fairytale. They feel like they bought a bill of good and now they want their money back, or at least their four hours.

So what could Kim’s divorce surprise mean for the powerful reality television family franchise? It could go either way. Watching reality TV requires viewers to believe that much of what they see is real. Although we all know that much of it is staged, part of the fun is thinking, wow, I can’t believe that these people are actually behaving like this.

If fans think that Kim got married, pocketed a paycheck, and then called it quits then they have a right to be irate. They may feel that she is making a mockery of not only marriage but of their support, as well. Let’s not forget that in addition to several TV shows and specials the Kardashian-Jenner enterprise includes perfumes, books, clothing, appearances, beauty products, and much more. They need consumers to buy these goods and that’s why Kris Jenner was on “The View” this morning singing her daughter’s praises.

Kris Humphries, for his part, is still reportedly hoping for reconciliation. If the two did get back together then the audience could feel like, wow, Kim is just like us. She makes mistakes like a normal woman. They could also feel this way even if they don’t reconcile. Who hasn’t made a momentous mistake in their lives? Plus, the Kardashian machine can edit the upcoming “Kim and Kourtney Take Manhattan,” which co-stars Kris Humphries, to make him look like a mega-jerk.

We predict that Kim will rise from the ashes to be more wealthy, powerful, and famous than ever before. Americans love a comeback story. She’s been the underdog before and her family built an empire on it. Either way, we will be watching.
