How to Recharge Your Laptop or Portable Device with a Solar Panel

When working or living far from an electrical outlet it can be a challenge to be able to recharge your electrical batteries for any portable electronic devices you may have. Fortunately by using a solar panel you can recharge that laptop, cell phone, radio, cordless power tool or any other electrical device. The question is how can a solar panel be used to charge batteries?

By connecting a 12 volt battery to a solar panel so that the 12 volt battery is being charged and then by connecting an inverter to that 12 volt battery any portable device can be recharged. Charging portable devices in this way does take a little longer than plugging them into a home electric socket.

Once you have a 12 volt battery use 12 inch long 12 gauge alligator clip wires to the battery’s positive and negative posts and then attach these wires to the inverter’s positive and negative wires. Then plug in your electrical devices into the inverter to charge their batteries.

To charge your 12 volt battery, attach both the negative and positive wires that are connected to the solar panel to the battery’s negative and positive posts. The charging time needed to charge the 12 volt battery depends on the type of solar panel you have, ideally two 5 watt solar panels can fully charge a 12 volt battery in 8 hours.

If you want some helpful advice visit a boat supply shop, many people live aboard boats and use this kind of system and they will surely have all the components to complete this kind of project. Buying your solar panels or inverter at a boat shop might be pricy but you can get them cheaper online or at a hardware store.
