Great Wintertime Activities for Senior Citizens

It’s true that some elderly people like to ski and ride in snowmobiles, and I know seniors who like to do just that. However, for the majority of senior citizens indoor winter activities are better because they are much warmer and safer. Indoor activities can still be just as interesting and fun as outdoor out activities, and they can still provide stimulation for the mind and soul.

Yoga.

Yoga can be very beneficial for elderly people; the meditation and relaxation required can keep blood pressure down and improve concentration and memory. The flow of blood is also increased which helps to reduce some of the effects of growing older. Because yoga is a gentle exercise it does not strain the joints and muscles which makes it a good exercise for seniors, and it keeps the body nice and flexible to.

Many senior centers have yoga classes so please check and see if yours does.

Equipment needed:
Simple stretchy clothing so that legs and arms can move freely. Bring water for small breaks.

Water Exercise classes.

Look for group water exercise classes in the community; they are a healthy sociable and fun way to meet people, if you meet for coffee later it’s even better.

Water exercises help the muscles to keep working properly and help the body’s metabolism stay at a healthy rate, some seniors have even reported that their cholesterol returned to normal.

Why not give it a try? Take a trip to your local gym or check out the notices at the local senior center.

Equipment needed: Swimsuit and towel, a bit of money and some good humor.

Table Tennis.

Think of tennis played with a small white ball and two almost equally small bats across a specially designed table with a net; my parents-in-law have been playing for years and they are two of the most active seniors I know.

Check out the local club for senior citizens and see if they do table tennis sessions;

Have a look at the local community centers as they might offer table tennis at certain times along with a good cup of tea in the cafe later.

Look for classes if you haven’t played before; it’s a good way to keep the mind and wrists flexible while having fun.

Equipment needed: If the venue you visit doesn’t provide bats and balls take your own. Good equipment can be bought at any good sport store.

Bowling.

Bowling is a sociable and fun way to get some exercise in mind and body. Check out the local bowling center for special rates and senior citizen bowling times. There are usually a few good senior citizen bowling leagues also.

There are normally bowling lessons for those of you that haven’t played before; and to top it all the environment is always fun and young, and the attached cafe’s are normally good for yummy food.

Equipment needed: Bowling centers include bowls and shoes in the price; however if you take it up seriously you can buy these at a good sport store.

Chess.

Chess is everyone’s game; some of us were taught as children others learned the game in adulthood, and of course many have yet to understand it. Take a look in the local library for a chess club in your area, these same clubs often have players willing to teach others how to play.

Chess works the brain and keeps it strong in flexible thinking and using strategy; a good activity for senior citizens who find physical activity hard.

Equipment needed: Chess board and chess pieces. Some centers have a few already there however it is a good idea to invest in your own. Chess sets can be bought in a hobby store or in a good chess store.

Scrapbooking.

This is great for everyone especially those seniors that like to make beautiful collages of their favorite photographs. There are many groups around and you can even start one of your own.

Equipment needed:
Scrapbook, glue, scissors, photographs and decorations.

Winter may be a hard cold time for many older people, but there is a lot to be said for getting together with others like yourself and enjoying an activity indoors….have a good winter.
