Book Wreath

If you’re a person who often does crafts you probably already know how expensive it’s becoming to make a wreath. By the time you buy the wreath ring, garland, flowers, berries, ribbons, and other embellishments, you’ve spent a small fortune. Wouldn’t you love to have the pleasure of making your own, beautiful wreath but doing so for just a buck or so? A book wreath is an uncomplicated project that turns out perfectly every time.

Purchase a Styrofoam ring to make the unusual but attractive wreath. The rings are available in various sizes at a craft store and are not expensive at all. This will be the base for the wreath.

Old books which have torn pages, paperbacks you no longer want, and similar books are perfect for recycling. The book wreath is just one way of turn old books into something new.

Tear a page from a book and fold it across the middle, width ways. Do this once again so that you have four layers. You can just draw a long leaf shape on the top layer, but if you’re not that confident in your artistic ability, use a simplistic template. Draw a leaf which is long, rounded on one end, and pointed at the other. When the leaf is drawn, and you cut through all four layers, that, of course, gives you four leaves. Do at least 25 pages so that you have a hundred leaves; you could use more or less. Fold each wreath in half, lengthways, crease well, and open each leaf again.

Use hot glue and begin attaching the leaves to the wreath. Position them down the center of the top of the ring, so that the rounded side is on the ring, and so that the pointed end extends away from the ring, and downward. Don’t position the leaves so that they stick straight out to the side. Apply a short line of hot glue, stick in the leaves, and use a pencil eraser or something similar, to help hold the leaves in the glue.

After making a circle of leaves, make another, and continue doing this until the top, the outside, and the inside of the wreath are covered with the book page leaves.

On the back of the wreath, fold a ribbon piece in half, then attach the ends of it to the wreath with straight pins. Or, hot glue the ribbon on. If you want a ribbon on the front, position it where you like, then use a straight pin or two to hold it in place. The wreath is a beautiful home accent for the fall, winter or – after decorating – any time of the year.
