Addition by Subtraction: A Theatrical Review

Addition by Subtraction: A theatrical Review

How many wrongs make a right? That is the question that is purposed by this intriguing piece currently playing at the El Centro Theatre in Hollywood, CA through November 6th.

A story about a man who has paid the penalties for something that was never intended and in so doing lost everything that his life once was. Addition by Subtraction is a story about how a truly genuine and kind hearted soul longs to leave something good to the world in which he has been a part of damaging. This production is both interesting and emotionally challenging, with just a few laughs in the right places to lighten the heaviness of the subject matter.

The El Centro theatre is a delightful little theatre located just west of the Paramount studios. It is not easy to locate, and there is truly only street parking, so be sure to provide yourself enough time to find the theatre and a good place to park. The house offers more than one theatre, and is located in a residential community so respect to the neighbors as far as noise level goes is important, but the amenities and ambiance of the theatre is well worth the visit.

R. J. Colleary, the writer of this production has found a way to ask moral and ethical questions that will captivate the audience. Director Kathleen Rubin has found a way to manipulate the stage and the cast that makes the production seem like a real life scenario the audience willingly accepts and becomes a part of. John Lacy, portraying the leading role of Patrick Dunn offers an outstanding performance with heart that sells the audience on the truths of his ethical dilemma. Ali Deyer, portraying Megan, offers a superbly emotional and respectful understanding of the friendship and love that can be offered by a person who is developmentally challenged. And Marcus McGee, portraying Father Robby, offers a real life understanding of what a new and young priest must go through as he attempts to counsel and guide Patrick while dealing with his own inner demons of understanding. The rest of the cast only adds to the productions success, but these three stands out amongst the group.

Addition by Subtraction is playing now through November 6, 2011 at the El Centro Theatre, located at 804 N. El Centro Ave. in Hollywood, CA 90038. Tickets are only $20, and shows are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8:00 PM and Sunday at 7:00 PM.
