10 Cheap Decorating Ideas

Home design doesn’t have to be expensive. There are great but simple decorating ideas that can change the look of a room that do not cost the homeowner a second mortage on their home. I have done of these in my own home with fabulous results.

One of the easiest ways to change a room that is absolutely free is to rearrange the furniture in the room. Beginning by using the largest piece of furniture in the room and turn it toward a painting or a window or any other focal point that you can have in the room. If you have furniture sitting along a wall, turn it at an angle and get it off the wall, which can make more floor space or just give the whole room a new look. The nice thing about this tip is that it is reversible at no cost as well. If you don’t like the look of it, simply move things around again.

Another way to change the look of a room that is fairly low cost is to add a folding screen to the room . There are many different styles and looks to screens these days and so you could change the whole atmosphere of the room by adding one of these. It would be possible to make the area behind the screen a dressing area or even add a small chair and make it a reading area. Screens add flair and visual interest to the room and can be used to hide the clutter that guests are not to see.

Dress up cabinet or dresser drawers by adding some flair to them by adding drawer pulls, new knobs, or handles to them. No matter what room you are looking to redecorate, this is an easy and inexpensive way to change the look of a piece or two of furniture. Most any local hardware store or home store will carry a wide array of colorful and artsy knobs and handles that are sure to spice up the room.

Buy new curtains. Although this can be a little more pricey than some of the other ideas, it is still cheaper than doing a full makeover of a room. New curtains can change the look of the room by adding color or a design to a room. If you want everything color coordinated, I would suggest that you find curtains that go with the colors in the room or you may be changing more than curtains once you hang the new ones. Another change that can be pricey, but worth the price is to add a sofa or chair cover in a new color.

If you have a collection of art work or small decor pieces that can hang on the wall, make a collage out of them. Find pieces that are different sizes and shapes and make a nice collage above the sofa or the bed. This could be done in any room as long as you have the wall space to make it attractive and not look cluttered. Add a mirror into this collage and it gives the room a larger look to it, even a small mirror can add size to an area.

Find a nice basket or small trunk at the local second hand shop or antique store and place it in a special area of the home. These items can replace a table or a magazine rack and will add some decor to the room. An older trunk that is in good shape or has an odd shape or design to it can double as the perfect coffee table in a living room and add storage space to the room.

Another free way to change the look of a room is to change the furniture with that in another room. Who ever said that the end tables had to both be the same and in the same room. Combine a living room end table with a small beside table and you will create a whole new look. Add a small kitchen pan onto a table instead of a candy dish. This will create a unique look to a room.

Fabric can make a whole room look different without making big changes. Pick up a yard or two of some fancy or unique fabric that you like and make a new pillow or two or even a new table runner for the room will add flair and style to a room. Adding a bold color can also change the room around. Make a pillow out of a plain color fabric and add a bright colorful bow to it.

Add new accessories to a room. This can be cheap if you look to auctions, second hand stores, and even flea markets or garage sales to find these items. Gather items you have sitting around the house and make a new arrangement out of them. Try items that would normally go in the kitchen or bathroom for other rooms of the house to find an arrangement that works for you.

Finally, the last two ideas are a little more work and a little more expensive. Give your home a warmer look by adding a coat of beige paint to the walls if they are white or add a large piece of very colorful furniture to the room. Add a splash of color to the bathroom by painting a border around the room in a colorful contrasting color. Another hint is to paint the front door of your home! Paint it red, orange, bright yellow, or even green. A fun color can make your home seem more inviting and give it a little more personality!

If you are crafty, there are many more ideas to redecorate without spending a lot of your hard earned money on new things for the house. I personally like to show off my skills and talents by adding items that I have made myself or that friends have made for me. I also like to add photos to my walls in a lot of different shaped frames which add style and flair. Consider this the year that you can make changes in your home decor and plan to be the cheapest remodel that you could have done.
