WWE: Ricky Steamboat- the Life Story of the Dragon Dvd Review

Ricky Steamboat has got to be one of the most influential wrestlers ever. His match with Randy Savage at Wrestlemania 3, redefined the business and changed it forever. This is a 3 disc set, that clocks in at 9 hours long. It was released in 2010 at a price of 30 dollars. Today its still about that price new, but you can probably find one used for 10 bucks.

Disc 1

Documentary- The documentary is about 1 hour and a half long. Ricky talks about were he was born. His parents, and growing up. How he got interested in wrestling. Getting trained by Verne Gagne. Were he got the name Steamboat. Traveling to different territories and doing other things on the side. He thinks that’s why he’s not considered the greatest wrestler of all time, because people questioned his dedication. How Ric Flair was influential on Steamboat’s success. There rivalry and matches. Then going into the WWF at the time. His time there and the Wrestlemania 3 match with Randy. Then leaving to be with his newborn son. Then going to the NWA/WCW. Then going back to the WWF as a fire breathing dragon. Then being unhappy there, to leave for WCW again. Then suffering an injury that ended his career. Then coming back from a 15 year retirement to face Chris Jericho. Then he talks about his son getting into the wrestling business.

Extras- Ricky tells short stories about his first car, what does Mike Graham remembers, how Ricky forgets his own name. Then on to the promos, interviews, and vignettes that are awesome to see.

Disc 2

Jack and Jerry Briscoe vs Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood at Starrcade 11/24/83- An amazing tag team match, with Ricky and Jay doing some fast moves against the technical Briscoes. I give it a 8/10.

Ricky Steamboat vs Ric Flair at Boogie Jam 3/17/84- A real grappling match for 60 minutes. Both Flair and Steamboat prided themselves as great athletes. This match shows why with some of the best wrestling ever. I give it a perfect rating. Ricky and Matt Striker do alternative commentary and its interesting stuff.

Ricky Steamboat vs Bob Orton at the Capital Centre 7/20/85- A good match, but it ended with a disappointing finish. Orton got disqualified for using his cast as a weapon. I give it a 7/10.

Ricky Steamboat vs Don Muraco at the Maple Leaf Gardens 9/22/85- A humorous lumberjack match, with Muraco trying to escape only to keep getting thrown back into the ring by the good guys. I give it a 7/10.

Ricky Steamboat vs Jake Roberts at Boston Garden 8/9/86- A great battle between these two ring masters. I give it a perfect rating.

Ricky Steamboat vs “Macho Man” Randy Savage at Wrestlemania 3 3/29/87- An awesome match, that transcended the wrestling business as we know it. From start to finish, this was greatness at its finest between these legends. I give it a perfect rating. Also Ricky and Matt do alternative commentary, and it makes the match more special.

Disc 3

Ricky Steamboat vs Ric Flair at Clash of the Champions VI 4/2/89- This was another pure wrestling classic. These guys wrestled another 60 minute match in a 2 out of 3 falls match. This was more fast paced and legendary then all of there matches. I give it a perfect rating.

Ricky Steamboat vs Lex Luger at the Great American Bash 7/23/89- This match was okay for the most part, then it ended with a lousy finish. I give it a 7/10

Ricky Steamboat and Dustin Rhodes vs Arn Anderson and Larry Zbyzsko at Clash of the Champions XVII 11/19/91- A wild tag team battle for the tag team belts. It got to the point were all 4 men just brawled it out at once. I give it a 9/10

Ricky Steamboat vs Rick Rude at Beach Blast 6/20/92- An iron man match for 30 minutes. Ricky injured Ricks ribs but Rick went up on Ricky easily. Then Ricky had to play catch up, Then when he did, it was to late for Rick to overcome that. This was another great storytelling match. This is by far my favorite match on the dvd. I give it a perfect rating.

Ricky Steamboat vs Stunning Steve Austin at Clash of the Champions XX 9/2/92- Another great match with Ricky and Steve battling out in a no DQ match. I give it a perfect rating. Ricky and Matt provided alternative commentary on the match and Austin.

Ricky Steamboat vs Chris Jericho at Backlash 4/26/09- Ricky coming off a 15 year retirement to wrestle Chris at Wrestlemania 25 was so impressive, that they had a rematch. This was outstanding because Ricky still has it. I give it a perfect rating.

Overall this is a must have dvd. The presentation, the documentary, extras, and match selection was almost perfect. I really enjoyed this dvd set, and is by far one of my favorites. Ricky was an underrated and unappreciated wrestler. The WWE finally gave him the respect he deserved.
