Wheat Sheaves Stairway Accent

Have you seen one of those pretty centerpieces that people are making from wheat sheaves? They just gather up a bunch of them, tie a ribbon around them, and the sheaves stand up by themselves. They’re the perfect choice for using as a Thanksgiving centerpiece. The grain itself symbolizes our blessing of food, and the color of the sheaves, well, they’re just beautiful. If you’re planning on making a wheat sheaf centerpiece – and even if you’re not – you can create a lovely, fall and Thanksgiving element when you use the sheaves on your stairway. If your stairs have a banister you’re all set.

You can find bundles of wheat sheaves at a large craft store and, sometimes, at a farmers’ market. Some sheaves are tan in color and others are green. It’s really quite a simple matter to separate the sheaves and create the look for your stairway. Just lay the whole bundle of sheaves on the table and begin separating them into smaller bundles. You’ll need one small bundle for each rail on the banister.

Create small bundles of the wheat sheaves so that they’re about the same size. You don’t necessarily have to count each sheaf; you can just stack a few so that they appear to be about the same size as the other bundles. When you have the individual bundles stacked, begin wrapping each one.

First, align the actual pods of the sheaves so that they are all at the same level. Then, cut across the bottoms of the stems to make them even – but leave them fairly long. Wrap a rubber band around the bundle and slide it up close to the pods.

Attach the wheat sheaf bundles to the rails of the stairs. Hold one bundle up to one rail and tie a ribbon around it. Instead of ribbon you can use twine, yarn, or another material. When you tie on the ribbon or other piece, tie it around the rubber band, and that will conceal it. It’s up to you if you place the wheat sheaves so that they’re on the inside or the outside of the rails.

There are different looks you can create, depending on the type of material you use to wrap the sheaves. You’ll create a sophisticated arrangement if you use satin ribbon. With ordinary twine, you accent the stairway in a more casual or rustic manner. The wheat sheaves offer you a quick way to give a fall look to your Thanksgiving day without putting out a lot of effort.
