Three Great Ways to Make a Difference in Dayton

Watch the evening news on any given evening, and you’ll know that our world has its share of problems. Not only is the need for help considerable across the world, but it’s just as just as great in your own back yard. With so many people in need and so many ways to serve, it’s not always obvious how to get started in making a positive impact locally. Fortunately for those in the Dayton, Ohio area, there are a variety of options that are well-suited for those looking to start serving others in their own neighborhood.

Share the Gift of Reading

While teachers in the Dayton area are instrumental in providing a quality education for local children, they also rely on others in the community to provide the after school educational support that is so critical. Project Read is an organization that connects volunteers with both students and adults to serve as literacy tutors. Their slogan is “building literacy through collaboration.” Project Read volunteers don’t even need tutoring experience, as they provide free training for their tutors. Not only that, but they provide the needed materials for the tutoring and connect you with someone in need of a tutor. To get started with Project Read, complete their on-line registration form or call them at 937-461-7323.

Empower the Elderly

One group of people in need that is often overlooked is the elderly. Life Essentials is an organization in Dayton that has recognized this fact, stating that “Life Essentials helps people who slip through gaps in community services” on their web site. Whether it is by assisting with day to day tasks through the Volunteer Caregivers program, providing companionship through the Chums program, or speaking for the best interests of an elderly person through the Guardianship program, this organization provides ample opportunity for Dayton locals to make a profound impact in the lives of senior citizens. Fill out their on-line contact form or phone them at 937-586-0545 to begin serving today.

Provide Affordable Housing for the Under-Privileged

In a time when quality jobs are hard to come by, it can be difficult for some to achieve the dream of home ownership. Fortunately, that is where Dayton Ohio Habitat for Humanity comes in. Their mission statement says that they “develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses.” In 2010, the Dayton Habitat chapter helped seven families become homeowners. You can serve with them in building houses, even if you don’t have experience in carpentry. To sign up to help with one of their construction projects, simply register on their volunteer page and choose a day on which you would like to serve.
