The Log Cabin

It was a million dollar heist. We were splitting it five ways and were going to live happily ever after, only we had to wait five years. We made a pack so we could actually enjoy the money. You see, the reason why no one is legally looking for the million is because it is not the kind of money anyone reports missing to the police. We got away with that caper, but we did have to lay low.

Even though no one could go to the police does not mean they were going to forget about the money. There was a cabin in the upper Midwest that Jim’s family owned and we hid the money there. We said we would stash the money there and we would return in five years to retrieve it. We built a special safe that had five keys to open it. It would need all five keys in order to open the safe.

We built a panic room in the cabin and hid the safe in it. We made a pact that if one of us did not make it, that person would will the key to the next person, but his share of the money would be given to his family. On this we all agreed.

We all went on about our business like nothing happened. Three years down the road Jim passed, he had a heart attack but he left his key and the cabin to the rest of us in his will and testament. We could not believe it and a couple of us thinking about our own mentality wanted to open the safe right then and there.

Jim’s wife contested the will because she wanted the cabin. Because of the high stakes this became a problem. We tried to reason with her but she would have none of it. We told her the old shack was only worth a couple of thousand and we would give her $20,000 for it. Well, she needed money and took it.

Because of this we decided she would not get her share. She was a money grubber and she got more than she deserved, so we considered the debt paid.

Over the next year one by one my partners met their demise and the keys and cabin were passed on until I was the only one left. As the days rolled on it was coming close to the time to retrieve the money. I did not know how to feel.

The day finally came and I had my 5 keys and I was going to finally claim my money. It feels almost like stealing again. I even decided to give Jim’s wife the cabin back and her share of the money after all.

Before I went to the cabin, I decided to get some excitement so I went to a nearby bar. I met a young lady and we went back to her place. She stayed in a wooded area on what seemed like 50 acres of land. In fact, you cannot even see the house from the road. I drove past there many times and had no idea a house was up in those woods.

Well, after a good time, I left later that night and as I was driving to the cabin I felt woozy. I tried to put on the brakes but I could not and I ran into a tree. I was in and out of consciousness and I believe both my legs were broken.

The glass had busted and some of it had hit me in the jugular vein and I was bleeding profusely. I had very little time left and all I could think of is that in a few seconds no one would be left to claim the million dollars.
