The Ancient Pines

The old men of the forest
Stand bare-boned to the knees.
Those worn trunks of the ancient evergreens,
Grown tall and lean.
Moss covered monuments
Topped by pine, stretch to the sky-
Where October’s winds howl;
Echoing throughout the woodland
Their warning of autumn.
