One of the best episodes of “The Big Bang Theory” is the beginning of the new dating episodes with Leonard and Penny. Sheldon receiving a cardboard Mr. Spook in the mail while Leonard is looking longingly into Penny’s open door and sees the ladies together. Unlike the wimpy Leonard the fans are used to, they get to see him take charge. He marches into Penny’s apartment and asks her out on date.
This alone would be enough surprise for one episode as it is a dramatic change of character for Leonard, but there is more to come. They go out on the first date and Leonard is most charming; not awkward or gauche at all.
Surprise number two is that the new Leonard did not last for long. He manages to screw up the date by harping over the word “always.” Penny gets irritated and tells him how he has to over think everything and ruin the moment. The date ends early and disgruntled Leonard goes growling into his room.
While he is tossing and turning in the middle of the night he gets a text message from Penny. She meets him outside his door and plants a big kiss on his face. They go into her apartment for a romantic interlude. They discuss what went wrong with the date, including the fact that it became too real for Penny and she got scared.
The couple talk it through and decide the best thing to do is to date in secret. Penny decides that they would tell their friends the date went sour. However, they have chosen to remain friends.
Surprise number three comes when the gang is having dinner together where Penny waitresses. Of course Howard has to make his off color jokes. Leonard reacts by getting angry and Penny refuses to serve the table.
At this point the fans are disappointed because they really do want Penny and Leonard to get back together again.
Surprise number four happens when Leonard gets another text in the middle of the night. Penny is once again at his apartment door and she is still angry over the way he handled the situation. Leonard retorts that he thought he was doing what he was supposed to be doing. Penny reminds him how they were supposed to tell everyone they were friends. They weren’t supposed to be fighting with each other. Again, she tells him that he over thinks every situation. The scene ends with the new Leonard taking charge once again and they go for their romantic interlude.
Surprise number five is the biggest surprise of all. Just when the fans think the couple will make it after all, they find out that it was all a dream. The show then reverts back the initial act where Sheldon is looking at his cardboard Dr. Spoke and Leonard is looking longingly at Penny through the open door.
Surprise number six is the final surprise. Leonard really does go in and ask Penny for a date.
Now that all the surprises are revealed, the fans will be waiting impatiently to find out if the two are going to be a couple after all.
