Highway fifty in Salida may not offer much these days as opposed to years ago. However, for nearly 40 years one place has seemingly remained unchanged by the times: Super Bowl Lanes. I went here way back in ’01 looking for something different.
The atmosphere had a very old seventies feel to it. Even the interior of the building hadn’t changed much between that time either. The small bowling alley had a single pool table that, when black lights were illuminated, made it glow-in-the-dark. There were two arcade games, a snack bar and for the adults, an actual bar that serves alcohol. What I liked best about this bowling alley was the laid back atmosphere. The staff was friendly and the prices to play a game of bowling, reasonable.
I didn’t bother signing up to be on any team. Seldom returned to the bowling alley once the economy started falling into a second depression. Money was tight. But the times I got to go to this bowling alley were great. I also liked the “black light” bowling nights, where the entire alley was lit up by purple black lights. The music was loud and they even had a disco ball rotating over head that cast a million dots of multicolored light onto the lanes. The pins illuminated white, almost seemed to glow with a ghostly aura. It was awesome, which is why I rate this particular bowling alley in Salida, CO one of the best I’ve been to in many years.
