Recycled Coffee Ground Buttons

Buttons of all shapes and sizes are used not only on clothing but as adornments on hats, shirts, earrings, bracelets and numerous craft items. Recycle used coffee grounds into unique and one-of-a-kind buttons.

Things You’ll Need:

1-cup used coffee grounds
½-cup cold coffee
1 cup flour
½-cup salt
Mixing bowl
Toothpick
Cookie sheet
Oven
Potholders
Acrylic spray sealer

Instructions:

Step 1 – Pour 1 cup used coffee grounds, ½-cup cold coffee, 1 cup flower and ½-cup salt in a mixing bowl. Mix the ingredients until they are the consistency of clay. Add more flour to make the mixture stiffer or more coffee to thin.

Step 2 – Make button shapes from the mixture that are approximately ¼-inch thick. Place the button shapes on a cookie sheet.

Step 3 – Make two to four holes in the middle of the button for attachment. Push the toothpick through the button at the desired location.

Step 4 – Preheat the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 5 – Place the cookie sheet in the oven and bake for 20 minutes.

Step 6 – Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and allow to cool for 30 minutes.

Step 7 – Spray 3 to 5 coats of acrylic sealer on both sides of the button. Allow 10 minutes between coats. The acrylic spray will protect the buttons from moisture.

Be creative with the button shape. The coffee ground clay molds into any shape.
