Practical Gift Ideas for a Baby Shower

Often times, people like to get cute baby gifts like fancy outfits or picture frames. I enjoy opening these presents as much as anyone. However, in the end, there are certain necessities that parents need for their baby. These are some practical gifts for a baby shower.

Diapers and Wipes

At my last shower, a friend gave me a giant box of wipes. The box was so big I had to have someone carry it to my car. I was so glad to have enough wipes to last me for several months. In addition to the wipes, several people also got me diapers. While these gifts may not be the most exciting, they are essentials. Before purchasing diapers or wipes, make sure to find out the preferred type or brand. Some people may not want disposable diapers.

Onesies and Sleepers

With my first child, I received a lot of adorable newborn dresses. Unfortunately, with the baby sleeping and growing so much, I didn’t get a chance to have her wear many of the outfits. She mostly wore onesies and sleepers. Thus, with my second child, I was happy to get a lot of practical clothes. If you want to get someone a dress or sweater, you might consider getting a bigger size. Many times people get a lot of newborn and three month old clothes. As a result, the person doesn’t have any clothing for when the child gets older.

Safety Kit

I felt so blessed when someone gave me a safety kit. Unfortunately, there’s a chance your baby might get sick. Thus, it’s nice to be prepared with a good thermometer and suction bulb. Finger clippers, tiny mittens and a soft hairbrush are other items found in many safety kits.

Car seat and Stroller

I was so glad that my in-laws purchased our baby’s first car seat. A proper car seat is another necessity for new parents. In addition, my parents gave us a great stroller that the car seat snapped into. Often times, these are some of the more expensive items on a registry. This is why it’s a good idea to chip in with others to buy the car seat.

Bath Products

Little things like diaper rash cream, a gentle baby wash and washcloths are essential for babies. A fun gift idea is to put all of these things into a baby bath. Include a hooded towel and some fragrance free lotion for the complete gift.

Play Yard, Crib or Co-Sleeper

All babies should have a safe place to sleep. Thus, consider purchasing a crib, play yard or co-sleeper. Play Yards are great for traveling. They fold up and can easily be taken on a trip. In addition, they often have a removable infant bassinet and changing station. This is great for newborns. When the baby gets older, you can remove the bassinet. The baby can sleep or play in this safe place. Personally, I like the travel light cribs because they can easily fit through doorways. They are similar to play yards but just a little smaller.

As always, check the parents’ registry before you buy a gift. People have different ideas of what is important. However, if you think the parents have forgotten something essential, it never hurts to go outside of the registry. Just make sure to include a gift receipt.
