Ode to Gato

What you mean to us will never be known
Every day we see you, sneaking through our yard
We couldn’t love you any more if you were our own

We left you some chicken, you devoured to the bone
It’s moments like this that with leftovers, we can’t discard
What you mean to us will never be known

Even as a wild kitty, you are a special kitty we can’t disown
We honor you in home movies in which you have starred
We couldn’t love you any more if you were our own

Trying to get close and talk, show you you’re not alone
We do this carefully, not trying to bombard
What you mean to us will never be known

We’ve seen your girlfriend and your little clones
In the neighborhood, for them, you stand guard
We couldn’t love you any more if you were our own

We saved your portrait on our phone
For one day, saying bye to our wild kitty will be hard
What you mean to us will never be known
We couldn’t love you any more if you were our own
