My Workout Routine to Keep Up with the Kids

As the kids get older and involved in more activities, especially sports, you want to be able to keep up with them. If you want to keep up when they run and play basketball, you’d better be in shape, or get back into some semblance of shape. With that in mind, along with the fact that my daughter has a running challenge at school (parents invited to participate) and my doctor always telling me I could stand to lose a few pounds, I thought I’d better get moving again.

Cardio, Cardio, Cardio

Right now, it’s all about the cardio. Right now, the goal is three miles a day, five days a week. On good days, I hit the street and run through my neighborhood. The traffic is light and it has plenty of hills to build stamina. On bad days, I stay inside and use the treadmill. I’m at 29 minutes on the treadmill now, with a goal to get down to 21. For the outside runs, I would really like to get down to 24 minutes.

Basketball

The kid needs to practice and I love the game. We only play half court in the driveway, but I try to get out there a couple of evenings a week until the weather turns bad. It doesn’t get the benefit of running full court, but the quick footwork really works the calves and thighs. It’s also some great quality time.

Bicycling

When the weather is nice, this is a great way for the family to spend time together and get some fresh air and exercise. It’s not as intense as running, but the leisurely pace and family time also helps clear the mind.

Anything Else that Keeps Me Moving

1- If you have a few extra minutes at the mall, walk the long way to the store, and take the stairs instead of the escalator. 2 – Get down and pull those weeds in the flower bed. It’s safer than herbicide and a good workout for your back. 3 – Push that lawn mower instead of riding. The back yard is too hilly, but the front is fairly flat and a good 30 minute work out.
