The first thing you need is a diamond sword. Easiest way to kill them by far. Slash Slash Slash is what i always say. Never use a pickaxe or a shovel because Mojango made it so swords have the best killing effect on the beasts.
Block yourself. Right clicking will help you deflect their attacks. By doing this you can quickly slash again and retreat to your blocking stance again.
Drown em: My favorite tactic to use against creepers is surround them in massive pools of water that drown them out. It is very strategic and highly underestimated by most. But is a great strategy if you want to get rid of these nasty things.
Remember, if you run into skeletons. Your best method of self defence is the bob and weave, by doing this the UI theyre based on will get confused and the skeleton will not know where to shoot his arrows.
