Lion King 3D Hits Big

Lion King debuted in theatres recently for the second time. The first time the cartoon musical topped the charts was in 1994. This time the Lion King is featured in a three-dimensional format. It brought in $22.1 million at the box office, in its second week. That brings its new release total to $61.7 million.

Lion King features Simba, a young lion cub born in Africa. He grows up in front of viewers eyes on camera from cub to an adult lion. As Simba sings in the movie, he can not wait to be king. His father is king, while his uncle Scar covets the throne of his brother. There are twists and turns with a number of musical scores. Lion King’s soundtrack includes “The Circle of Life”, “Be Prepared”, and “I Just Can’t Wait to be King.” It won Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “Can you Feel the Love Tonight.”

Actors and familiar voices in the movie include James Earl Jones, Jonathon Taylor Thomas, Matthew Broderick, and Whoopi Goldberg. The animated film is intellectual property of the Walt Disney Company. The original, 2D version is the highest grossing animated film ever made in the United States. It was made on a $45 million budget and has made $862,017,776 at the box office.

Disney planned to release the 3D Lion King in theaters for only two weeks. However, there are reports that that time frame will be expanded. The movie last for one hour and twenty-seven minutes. Lion King 3D is set to release on October 4, 2011.
