Here’s How Homeschoolers Can Teach Common Sense and Practical Application

We all know that academics are important for homeschoolers to learn, and we can agree that physical education should also be included in any homeschooling routine. However, how much time do homeschoolers spend on learning how to actually apply the necessary tools in life. Let me explain.

It’s a fact of life that when a young adult leaves home to attend college, to get an apartment, or to find a job, it’s inevitable that they’ll discover lots of things that they’ll now be required to take care of for themselves; things that they’ve unknowingly taken for granted. As their parents then, it’s essential for their children’s own well being that they also teach them to live independently and within their means.

Do they know how to balance a checkbook, change their vehicle’s oil, change a tire or check tire pressure, sort laundry or run a washer and dryer? Regardless of what gender they are, there are loads of things every child should know before he or she leaves home.

How about organizing? Do they throw their books and belongings in the corner on the floor, or do they keep their clothes hung up and their books on the shelf so as to find those things later when they have no time to look? Do they realize what the price of gas will cost them in the long run if they use the car to get to places they can easily bike or run?

Using coupons can save lots of money when they’re a student in college and trying to pinch every penny. Teach them the value of buying at second hand and dollar stores for things like school supplies or items for decorating their apartment or dorm room. Then too, staying healthy is vital when they’re supporting themselves, when they can’t miss their college finals, or when they have a job interview. Teach the best way to cook and eat nutritious meals instead of stopping by the nearest fast food restaurant every time they drive by.

Do they know basic first aid? Are they truly ready in case of a weather emergency in harsh climates, or a fire in their dwelling? Do they know what to do if they need to protect themselves from an assault or intruder’s attack?

There are so many things that most parents just don’t prepare their children for when it comes to practical application. Most often the concern is focused on books, supplies, clothes, and other “things” with very little attention given to necessary common sense.

If you incorporate thoughtful practical applications into your every day homeschool on a regular basis, they’ll learn most all of what they need to know to live safely, economically, and wisely. So, before you let your budding adults strike out on their own, become a wise parent and prepare them for real life. They’ll thank you for it.
