It’s all the rage to make many of the things you’ll be needing for your wedding. The bride herself – or her bridesmaids – often make the floral arrangements, decorations, table centerpieces and even fashion accessories. When you make wedding things yourself you can have exactly what you want for a fraction of what you would pay for something that you’ll accept. If you’re having an elegant wedding – but you’re doing so on a budget – there are many beautiful things you can make yourself. Whether the projects be large or small you’ll be able to create just the wedding you want. But, let’s start with something small, like headbands. A white one for you; pink, blue, yellow or another color for the bridesmaids. Headbands aren’t hard to find but elegant ones can be difficult to locate. When you do find them, well, there goes your budget. Tell you what: go buy cheap, dollar-store headbands and make them into exquisite versions which are perfect for your elegant wedding.
For a buck you can buy a padded headband which you can turn into the one you really want. The padded headbands are easy to paint with fabric paints or even paint markers. You’ll find the markers or the tube paints at any craft store. Purchase a beautiful, gold or silver paint marker or use glittery fabric paint.
If you haven’t decided on a veil yet you can use the headband as the base for the veil. Simply use hot glue to attach netting across the headband. If you’ll be making this veil the headband will not need to be painted since it will be covered by the veil.
It’s really helpful, when painting the headbands, to roll up a towel. Place the headband on the towel to hold it still while you paint. You can use stencils to create a particular pattern or you can just write or draw in a freehand style. Some choices for designs include intertwined hearts, ordinary hearts, glitter polka-dots or just random swirls.
Besides markers and paints there is another way to create dazzling headbands. Fake jewels – rhinestones – are not expensive and, when you buy the adhesive kind, you can make a nice design in minutes. The jewels really capture light and will sparkle as you walk down the aisle.
Sequin, like rhinestones, are very glittery. Use hot glue to attach them quickly but watch out for the hole in the center of each sequin; you don’t want to get burned by the glue. Hold the sequin down with a straight pin or other implement.
There are certain things for your wedding which you won’t be able to make, and they could be costly. But, when it comes to something like headbands there is no reason to spend upwards of twenty bucks on each one. Just buy those dollar-tree headbands and turn them into designer-look versions which will certainly get noticed.
