An easy to make homemade decorative plate uses the technique of decoupage. An old glass plate and a piece of printed medium weight wrapping paper, thin wall paper or fabric combined together create a unique and interesting conversation piece. Make one for yourself and several for gifts. When using fabric to make a decorate plate, wash and dry the fabric first to remove fabric sizing. Iron the fabric to remove all wrinkles.

Items You’ll Need:

Transparent or translucent glass plate
Soap and water
Lint free towel
Patterned fabric, medium weight wrapping paper or thin wall paper
Disappearing sewing marker or pencil
Scissors
Mod Podge decoupage glue
1-inch sponge brush
Craft knife
Acrylic paint

Process:

Step 1 – Clean the transparent or translucent glass plate with soap and water. Dry the plate with a lint free towel. Allow the plate to air dry 5 minutes.
Step 2 – Turn the plate upside down and place it on the fabric, medium weight wrapping paper or thin wall paper. Draw a line around the plate leaving a 1-inch border of material that extends past the outside edge.
Step 3 – Make 2-inch slits from the outside of the cut shape toward the center approximately every 1 ½-inch. This provides a give to the fabric, wrapping paper or wall paper so it will conform to the shape of the plate.
Step 4 – Paint the back of the plate with a thin coat of Mod Podge.
Step 5 – Center and drape the cut material over the back of the plate. Locate the center and press down firmly. Move your fingers back and forth to eliminate all air bubbles and wrinkles. Continue moving from the center of the plate to the outside edge pressing the material to the plate.
Step 6 – Carefully paint a thin layer of Mod Podge over the material on the back of the plate.
Step 7 – Place the plate in a safe location to air dry. This will take up to 4 hours depending on the humidity and temperature of the room.
Step 8 – Trim the edge of the material as close to the plate as possible with a craft knife.
Step 9 – Apply a layer of acrylic paint over the back of the plate. Apply a second coat if necessary to cover the material completely. Place the plate in a safe location to air dry. Note: The paint is applied to the back of the plate to prevent the Mod Podge from dissolving.

Caution: A decoupage plate is not dishwasher safe. Hand wash only!
