E-books Aren’t the Only Things Changing Publishing

Merriam-Webster Dictionary :

Unconventional, adj

“not conventional : not bound by or in accordance with convention: being out of the ordinary”

Let me begin by saying, this blog isn’t your conventional blog. I know you may have deducted this from the title, but let me explain. Most publishing blogs center around reviewing or suggesting books. While some blogs center around the age-old battle:print vs digital books .

An Unconventional Publisher on the other hand, strictly focuses on my attempts to pave a career in an industry shaken by declining print sales and high tech advancements. Movies would have you believe that the publishing industry is all glitz and glam, but this is untrue. It’s a difficult industry to break into and gets more so whenever a huge retail chain like Borders closes. What do you think this means for Barnes & Noble? What could this mean for publishers? Thoughts?

Why become a publisher during this turbulent time?
That’s a good question. The answer is simple: new advancements mean new opportunities for newbies. That’s why I’m investing in a Master’s program at George Washington University . I DON’T expect this program to create job opportunities. However, I DO expect the classes to help me develop an extensive portfolio. I expect GWU to help, open doors and connect me with industry professionals. (Side note: You don’t need a Masters degree to break into publishing. Certification programs offer the same qualities in shortened length; many publishing pros use programs to brush up on their skills).

So, who reads An Unconventional Publisher?
Anyone who can relate to wanting to change careers. It’s a sad reality, but only a few dreamers actually follow their passions. Fortunately, I’m a 20something without children or a home, so right now it’s a possibility. Hopefully my edutainment memoir will inspire you to embark on your goals.

I hope my confessions don’t scare you away from your dreams. Publishing students DON’T resign from your programs. I have to admit these confessions can be incredibly gloomy, but this comes with the territory. If you’re relocating for school without a job it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Add relocating during a recession to the mix and hello gloomy entry.

I ask you again, don’t give up on your dreams. Instead let us be unconventional together and stop putting an expiration on our dreams. I hope you see this blog as a revolutionary work that can change the way aspiring publishers approach job searches and networking. The publishing world is ever changing and I believe the new crop of publishers should too. What do you believe?

Before checking out to bed, check in with An Unconventional Publisher Confesses Tuesday nights at 9pm. Next entry will be on October 20.
