Big Budget Steampunk Decor

If you love the steampunk look and want to create it on a large scale in your home, you’re in luck. There are a number of home accessories and decor items you can use to create that kind of look in your own home.

Steampunk is not only very popular, it’s also very very cool, so you’re making a good decision to go with a steampunk look in your home. However, you may wonder what exactly you should do to create the look you have in mind. It might be helpful to have some ideas that will help you know what’s available and what you can do with your decorating.

General Steampunk Decor

One of the most important things you can do to create a great steampunk look in your home is metal wall art . Wall hangings and pictures made of metal will instantly give your room that steampunk feel, without any other accessories at all. But not just any metal. Avoid gleaming silver and gold, and go for beaten and worn copper and brass. Large wall hangings will create a “metal wall” look, which is great. You may also want to consider painting your walls in steampunk colors-browns and blacks and other subdued tones. A sepia-brown wall with metal art on it would be a great steampunk décor.

Lighting

Decorative lighting in the steampunk style is different from traditional lighting as we know it. In the steampunk era, fictional as it may be, electricity was new and lighting was yellowish and subdued-and didn’t come out of chandeliers and touchier lamps. It mostly came from lanterns and lamps. Hanging lanterns are a great way to augment your steampunk look with some subtle lighting. You may not want to use this as your room lighting, because it will be very dim. But for the look, it’s great.

Furnishings

There are many companies that specialize in steampunk furniture . They are mainly victorian pieces that are modified with steampunk touches. Bits of machinery, gears and hardly functional but extremely fashionable contraptions are all the rage.

Outdoors

And don’t let your steampunk look stop inside your home. Take the time to create a steampunk look outside, as well. You can do this primarily with lighting. You don’t have to completely redecorate the outside of your home. But some changes to your outdoor lighting might be called for.
If you currently have an outdoor street lamp-type light, that is a good start. If you have lights along your sidewalk, those probably will need to go before you start your outdoor steampunk decorating. Or, you may choose to make them less visible when they’re turned off, perhaps with a brass covering over the top of the light that still allows it to glow out.
When you look around for ideas for steampunk decoration, you’re sure to see them everywhere. Even ordinary items, reused in an interesting way, can be steampunk. That’s one of the beauties of this very whimsical style-it uses everything, including your imagination.
