5 Inexpensive Ways to Add Appeal to a Stairwell

In many homes, the stairwell is often overlooked when decorating, but there are many ways to add visual interest. Here are a few quick ideas how to do so without breaking the bank. And most don’t require finding a new place for that picture of grandma.

Two-toned paint job and chair rail. Paint one or more surrounding walls to waist height, then install chair rail at the dividing line. This can be a great way to handle some types of open stairwells, and pull together the upper and lower level colors.

Greenery. If the landing is large enough, add a long plant stand against the wall. Fill with either fake or live plants, depending on sunlight exposure. Consider adding a climbing vine, but trim before it reaches any outlets, light fixtures, etc. Neglecting to do so can pose a hazard.

Add shelving. Corner shelves can be picked up in thrift stores for a few dollars. Decorate with plants, candles or knick knacks, but don’t forget to include it when dusting.

Candles. Add pillar candles to the side of each step, either at random or in a pattern. Using only white candles can have a stunning effect, especially on dark colored steps. Please consider if this may pose a risk to children, elderly, handicapped individuals or others who use the stairs. Lighting the candles is not recommended.

Railing. New railing can cost a small fortune, but spicing up the current one can be done with a little effort. Wrap with fake vines, flowers or a string of small white lights. Check that the use of the railing is not impaired.

With a little creativity and an eye on safety, it is possible to turn a set of functional stairs into a focal point. Or at least make it more interesting.
